Most healthy cats do not need routine baths because they groom themselves. Bathing can be stressful and unnecessary washing may affect the skin and coat. Cats Protection recommends seeking veterinary advice when a bath is genuinely needed, such as contamination with something potentially toxic. Use only cat-appropriate products and never use dog or human shampoo.

Brushing removes loose hair and helps prevent or identify tangles, mats and changes in coat condition. Frequency depends on coat type. Long and dense coats generally need more regular grooming than short coats. Work gently and stop if the cat becomes distressed; extensive matting may require professional help.

Cat dental care covers prevention, home cleaning, recognition of dental disease and veterinary treatment. Dental disease can be painful while cats hide symptoms. PDSA identifies tooth brushing as the best home prevention method when tolerated and advises veterinary assessment for pain, bleeding gums, bad breath, difficulty eating or other changes.

Ear care means monitoring the ears for normal appearance and signs of wax, irritation, discharge, odour or discomfort. Older or less mobile cats may need closer checks, and Cats Protection recommends cat-specific clippers or help from a vet nurse if the owner is unsure.
