Preparing fish for transport

Tropical fish transport should be kept as short and calm as practical. RSPCA warns that fish can suffer shock or oxygen starvation when transported improperly and says fish should not be sent through the post. When buying fish, take them home promptly and avoid unnecessary stops, bright sunlight, extreme temperatures and rough handling.

The journey

Before the journey, prepare the destination aquarium so it is mature, heated correctly and has zero ammonia and nitrite. OATA recommends checking compatibility and water quality before bringing new fish home. On arrival, acclimatise fish gradually rather than releasing them immediately into water with different temperature or chemistry. Follow the acclimatisation method recommended by the retailer or species care sheet.

Acclimatising on arrival

For a house move or longer transport, seek specialist advice because the appropriate container, oxygen supply, temperature control and journey planning depend on the species and duration. Do not attempt improvised transport for valuable or sensitive fish without guidance. After release, monitor the fish closely for the first days and keep water quality stable. Good transport planning begins before the fish leaves its established aquarium and ends only after it has settled into suitable conditions.
