Use habitat as enrichment

Most aquarium fish do not need conventional toys. Enrichment can come from an environment that allows exploration, hiding, resting, swimming and feeding behaviours. Plants, caves, wood, rocks and open swimming areas can all have a purpose when chosen for the species. The layout should support normal behaviour rather than simply filling unused space.

Match features to the species

A shy fish may benefit from cover, while an active swimmer needs clear routes through the aquarium. Shoaling species have social requirements that decorations cannot replace, and territorial fish may need carefully planned boundaries. Research the natural environment and behaviour of the exact fish before choosing enrichment. Do not assume that a decoration suitable for one aquarium is suitable for another.

Make enrichment safe and maintainable

Every item should be aquarium-safe, stable and free from sharp edges or substances that could contaminate water. Secure heavy structures so they cannot collapse and leave enough room for fish to swim normally. Decorations must not block filtration or make maintenance^★ impossible. RSPCA guidance emphasises appropriate aquarium environment, water quality and species-specific care, so enrichment should support those fundamentals rather than compete with them.
