Prepare before buying livestock

Do not treat tropical fish as an impulse purchase. The aquarium should be appropriate for the intended species, with filtration, heating, temperature monitoring and suitable water conditions established first. RSPCA guidance strongly recommends fishless cycling so beneficial bacteria can become established before fish are introduced. Research adult size, temperature, water hardness, diet, social needs and compatibility for every species being considered.

Assess the fish and retailer

When visiting a retailer, look at the aquarium rather than choosing a fish from a photograph alone. RSPCA advises buying from shops with healthy animals and well-maintained tanks. Fish should appear to swim normally; watch for obvious signs such as split fins, white spots, open sores, severe thinness or abnormal behaviour. Ask knowledgeable staff about the exact species and its requirements rather than relying only on a common name.

Plan the journey home

Fish are live animals, not interchangeable retail products. Minimise transport time and protect the fish from temperature extremes. Once home, acclimatise them carefully and avoid adding transport water unnecessarily.
