Choose food for the species

Tropical fish have different diets and feeding behaviours. Some feed at the surface, others in mid-water or on the bottom, while nocturnal species may feed later. RSPCA guidance recommends choosing food appropriate to the fish and using suitable forms such as sinking foods for bottom-dwelling species. Check the species' nutritional needs before treating a general-purpose food as suitable for every aquarium.

Use treats carefully

Supplementary foods can provide variety, but they should not become an uncontrolled source of excess food. RSPCA notes that suitable frozen foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp can be used for tropical fish, depending on species. Frozen food should be fully thawed before feeding. Introduce new foods in small amounts and watch whether fish accept them without leaving substantial leftovers.

Protect water quality

The safest treat is one that is appropriate, measured and eaten promptly. RSPCA recommends feeding only what fish can consume within about two to five minutes and avoiding overfeeding. Uneaten food decomposes and contributes to poorer water quality. If fish repeatedly leave food, reduce the portion and investigate whether the food form, tankmates, temperature or health is affecting feeding behaviour.
