What RAM does

RAM, or random access memory, is the computer^★'s short-term working memory. Active applications use it for data and instructions that need fast access. Adding capacity can help when a system regularly runs out of usable memory, but the best upgrade depends on the workload and the platform's limits.

Specifications that matter

Check capacity in GB, memory generation, data rate, timings, module type and the number of modules. Desktop DIMMs and laptop^★ SO-DIMMs are different formats. The motherboard and processor determine supported memory technology and configuration. Kingston's compatibility tools are useful as a secondary check, but the computer or motherboard manufacturer's specifications should remain the primary reference for a particular system.

Buy for compatibility, not just headline speed

A higher advertised data rate is not automatically a better purchase if the platform cannot support it as intended. Confirm the generation first, then check capacity and supported speeds. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable, so upgrading across generations may require a motherboard^★ and processor change. Also consider whether the system benefits more from additional capacity than from a small increase in memory speed. Check the exact model, slot availability and supported configuration before buying.
