Designing an indoor space

Indoor rabbits still need a full welfare-focused environment. Living inside protects rabbits^★ from some outdoor hazards, but it does not remove their need for space, exercise, companionship, hiding places, foraging and appropriate diet. RWAF recommends a permanent area of at least 3m x 2m x 1m for up to two rabbits, and the principle applies whether the area is indoors or outdoors.

Rabbit-proofing the home

Rabbit-proof the room or enclosure before allowing access. Protect electrical cables, remove toxic plants and keep household chemicals, unsafe foods and small swallowable objects out of reach. Provide a secure resting area, non-slip flooring, hiding places and opportunities to explore. Hay should be freely available, with fresh water and an appropriate diet. Temperature, ventilation^★ and household noise should also be considered.

Daily indoor care

Indoor rabbits still need daily health checks. Observe appetite, droppings, behaviour, coat and the rear end, and maintain regular cleaning. Give them safe opportunities to move rather than keeping them in a small cage. If the rabbit suddenly eats less, produces fewer droppings or behaves unusually, contact a vet promptly. Indoor living is a management choice, not a substitute for meeting the rabbit's natural physical, social and behavioural needs.
