How rabbit teeth are supported

Rabbit teeth grow continuously, so diet and veterinary monitoring are important. RSPCA explains that hay and grass help wear teeth down naturally and that an unsuitable diet can contribute to serious dental disease. Providing plentiful fibre-rich forage is therefore a core part of dental care, alongside suitable leafy greens, measured pellets and fresh water.

Signs of dental trouble

Watch for changes such as difficulty eating, reduced appetite, dropping food, reluctance to eat hay, weight loss, wet fur around the mouth or changes in droppings. These signs can have several causes, but dental disease is an important possibility and should be assessed by a vet. A rabbit that suddenly eats less can deteriorate quickly because normal gut function depends on continued food intake.

Veterinary dental care

Owners should not attempt to cut, file or otherwise correct overgrown or misaligned rabbit teeth at home. RSPCA specifically advises that only vets should correct such teeth. Routine observation is useful, but it does not replace professional dental examination when there is a concern.
