How Much Should a Cat Eat?

Use the food label as a starting point

How much a cat should eat depends on factors including age, weight and activity. Cats^★ Protection recommends following the food manufacturer's guidance and checking the cat's weight periodically. The correct amount cannot be determined reliably from body size alone because foods vary in energy density and individual cats have different requirements.

Consider life stage and feeding pattern

Kittens have smaller stomachs and need smaller amounts more often, while adult cats can have a different routine. Cats often prefer little-and-often feeding. Wet and dry food can both be suitable when complete, but the daily amounts need to be considered together if they are mixed. Treats should be limited and the normal allowance reduced where appropriate so they do not cause unintended overfeeding. Fresh water should always be available.

Monitor body condition and appetite

Look at the cat rather than treating an empty bowl as proof that more food is needed. Regularly monitor weight, body condition, appetite and normal behaviour. Neutered cats may have lower energy needs, so feeding may need review. If a cat becomes overweight or underweight, suddenly changes its eating or drinking habits, or stops eating, veterinary advice is appropriate.
