Dog raincoats are waterproof or water-resistant garments intended to help keep a dog’s body and coat dry during wet weather. A raincoat can be useful for dogs that dislike getting soaked, dogs with thin coats and owners who want easier drying after wet walks.

Choosing and using the product

Look for waterproof or water-resistant fabric, coverage, breathable construction, secure fasteners, reflective details and an opening that works with the dog’s harness or lead. Measure the dog carefully and introduce the coat gradually. Check underneath the garment after a walk for rubbing, trapped moisture or irritation. Dry the dog appropriately after wet weather. Lightweight rain shells are suitable for wet but mild weather; lined raincoats offer more warmth. A raincoat is not a substitute for insulation in severe cold and can make some dogs uncomfortable.

Choose according to the individual dog's size, behaviour and needs, follow manufacturer instructions and inspect the product regularly for damage or poor fit. Equipment should support welfare and normal movement rather than restrict, frighten or injure the dog.
