Coat and skin care

Grooming needs vary substantially between dogs. Short coats may need less brushing than long, dense or curly coats, while some breeds need professional clipping or specialist coat care. Regular brushing can remove loose hair and help prevent mats. Grooming should be introduced calmly and maintained as a routine rather than only when the coat becomes difficult to manage.

Use grooming as a health check

Handling the coat, ears, paws and body gives owners an opportunity to notice lumps, wounds, parasites, sore areas, changes in skin or unusual odours. Teeth and nails also need routine attention. PDSA recommends regular grooming and dental care. Dogs with painful skin, severe matting or other problems may need veterinary assessment rather than an attempt to fix the issue aggressively at home.

Making grooming positive

Introduce brushes, clippers, dryers and handling gradually. Reward calm behaviour and keep early sessions short. Do not force a frightened dog through a stressful procedure. If professional grooming is needed, choose a competent groomer and explain the dog^★'s health, temperament and previous experience. Grooming requirements should be considered before choosing a breed because they affect both time and ongoing cost.
