Complete, complementary and specialist foods

The first distinction when comparing dog^★ foods is whether the product is labelled complete or complementary. A complete diet is intended to provide the nutrients needed when fed as directed. Complementary products, including some treats and mixers, are designed to be used alongside other food. This distinction is more useful than judging a food simply by whether it is wet, dry or packaged in a particular format.

Wet and dry formats

Wet and dry foods have different moisture levels, textures and energy densities. Either can form part of a suitable routine when the product is appropriate for the dog and used according to its feeding guidance. Some owners combine formats, but the daily quantities need to be considered together. Treats and extras should not quietly turn into a large additional source of food. Keep water available at all times and introduce substantial dietary changes gradually.

Match the food to the dog

Age, adult size, activity, body condition and health all influence feeding decisions. A growing puppy, active working dog or dog with a medical condition cannot automatically be fed in the same way as a healthy adult companion dog. Check the label, feeding instructions and life-stage suitability, then monitor the dog rather than relying on marketing claims. Persistent appetite changes, unexplained weight change or repeated digestive problems justify professional advice.
