Dog cooling products are equipment intended to help a dog manage heat, such as cooling mats, cooling jackets, cooling collars and other cooling aids. Cooling products can provide comfort during warm conditions, but preventing overheating is more important than relying on a product. Dogs can develop heat-related illness quickly.

Choosing and using the product

Cooling mats vary in construction, including self-cooling gel designs and products requiring pre-cooling. Cooling jackets can work differently and some need to remain wet. Use products exactly as instructed and monitor the dog throughout use. Provide shade, ventilation^★ and access to fresh water and avoid strenuous exercise in dangerous heat. Cooling mats can give a dog a cool resting surface; cooling jackets may help some dogs when correctly used. Product suitability depends on the individual dog, environment and weather.

Safety and suitability

RSPCA guidance stresses that cooling products must not be used to justify walking dogs in hot weather. Prevention and avoiding heat exposure are the priority. Some cooling jackets can insulate a dog and make them hotter if used incorrectly. Monitor mats because some can warm up after their cooling effect ends. Signs of heat illness require urgent veterinary attention. RSPCA specifically warns that cooling mats and jackets differ and should be selected and used carefully. Compare cooling method, size, durability, cleaning, chew resistance and manufacturer instructions. Treat cooling equipment as an aid, not a substitute for safe heat management. Choose according to the individual dog's size, behaviour and needs, follow manufacturer instructions and inspect the product regularly for damage or poor fit. Equipment should support welfare and normal movement rather than restrict, frighten or injure the dog.
