Where DDR5 fits

DDR5 is a newer generation of double-data-rate memory designed for compatible modern platforms. It can offer higher memory bandwidth and newer platform support, but it requires a motherboard^★ and processor platform designed for DDR5. It is therefore a platform-compatibility decision as much as a memory purchase.

Specifications to compare

Check total capacity, data rate, timings, module type, number of modules and the motherboard's supported population rules. Kingston's compatibility information shows that supported speeds and configurations depend on the processor^★ and chipset, so a headline speed should not be treated as a guarantee for every system. Check the motherboard manual and, where available, its memory support or qualified list.

Compatibility before performance

DDR5 and DDR4^★ use different physical keying and electrical specifications and cannot be mixed on the same motherboard. If moving from DDR4 to DDR5, the motherboard must support DDR5 and the processor platform must also be compatible. For a new build, compare the complete platform rather than choosing RAM in isolation. For an existing PC, verify the exact system model or motherboard before ordering.
