Daily care and welfare

Good rabbit care is more than providing food and a hutch. A pet rabbit needs a suitable environment, a good diet, opportunities to behave naturally, appropriate companionship and protection from pain, injury and disease. These needs should be considered together rather than as separate shopping^★ decisions. Rabbits are social animals, so owners should plan for compatible rabbit companionship and enough permanent space for movement, resting, hiding, foraging and exercise.

Diet, housing and companionship

Diet is central to long-term welfare. Hay and grass should form the main part of the diet, with safe leafy greens, a small measured amount of suitable pellets and constant access to fresh water. Sudden dietary changes should be avoided. The living area should be secure, dry, well ventilated and large enough for rabbits to move normally. RWAF recommends a permanent area of at least 3m x 2m x 1m for up to two rabbits^★, alongside suitable shelter and enrichment.

Health checks and prevention

Everyday observation is important. Check eating, drinking, droppings, behaviour, coat condition and the area around the tail. Rabbits can become seriously ill without obvious early signs, so a change in appetite or droppings warrants prompt veterinary advice. Regular veterinary care^★, vaccination and neutering should be discussed with a rabbit-friendly vet. Grooming, clean bedding, safe toys, digging and foraging opportunities also form part of responsible care.
