Understand normal cat behaviour

Cats^★ communicate through body language, scent, vocalisation and behaviour. Hiding, scratching, climbing, hunting-style play and choosing elevated resting places can all be normal. Problems often arise when the environment does not provide suitable outlets or when a cat feels threatened. Punishment can increase fear and should not be the first response to unwanted behaviour.

Provide appropriate outlets

Offer scratching posts, hiding places, high resting areas, play and food enrichment. Keep litter trays clean and place them away from food and water. In multi-cat homes, distribute resources to reduce competition. Introduce changes gradually and allow the cat to retreat. Reward calm behaviour and use interactive play to redirect inappropriate hunting or attention-seeking behaviour.

Investigate sudden changes

New aggression, house-soiling, excessive vocalisation or withdrawal can have medical as well as behavioural causes. Arrange a veterinary check before assuming the problem is simply training. If a behaviour problem persists, ask the vet about an appropriately qualified behaviourist. The aim is to identify the underlying need and change the environment or routine safely.
