Travelling with a bird requires advance planning because transport changes the bird's environment, routine and access to food, water and temperature control.

Prepare the transport setup

Use a secure carrier or transport arrangement appropriate to the species and journey. It should prevent escape and allow the bird to remain stable without unnecessary crowding. Prepare familiar food or water arrangements where practical and avoid loose items that could cause injury. Let the bird become familiar with the carrier before a non-urgent journey.

Manage the journey

Keep the vehicle environment stable, well ventilated and free from smoke or strong fumes. Avoid direct exposure to excessive heat or cold and do not leave the bird unattended in a parked vehicle. Reduce unnecessary noise and handling. For longer journeys, plan how the bird's needs will be met and check any transporter's or destination's requirements in advance.

Check current legal requirements when moving birds, particularly across borders, between premises or where disease-control restrictions apply. Government bird-flu guidance can change during outbreaks, so check current rules before travel. For an ill or injured bird, seek veterinary advice before deciding that ordinary travel arrangements are suitable. Carry identification, relevant records and emergency contact details where appropriate.
