Useful routine supplies

A clean carrier, appropriate cleaning equipment, fresh-food and water supplies and safe environmental accessories are practical foundations. Keep the bird's usual food available and maintain accurate information about its species, diet and veterinary contact. Where recommended by a veterinary professional, specific supplements or care products may also be appropriate.

Use health products carefully

Do not give medicines, supplements or treatments simply because they are marketed for birds. Species, dose and health condition matter, and an incorrect product can delay proper treatment. Read product instructions and follow veterinary advice. Keep medicines and chemicals securely away from the bird and dispose of expired products appropriately.

Emergency readiness

Know the signs that require urgent veterinary attention, such as breathing difficulty, significant bleeding, collapse or a sudden severe change in behaviour. Keep a suitable carrier ready and know how to contact an avian-experienced veterinary service. Routine observation remains the most important 'health supply': knowing the bird's normal appetite, activity, droppings and appearance makes changes easier to recognise.
