Bird Cage and Aviary Guide

A bird cage or aviary should be selected around the bird's welfare needs, not simply the dimensions printed on the product box.

Size and movement

Choose housing that gives the bird appropriate room to move, exercise and use its perches without obstruction. Larger or highly active birds may need substantially more space and opportunities for flight than a conventional cage provides. Consider whether a separate flight area or aviary is needed for the species and household.

Construction and layout

Check bar spacing, door security, materials, cleaning access and the strength of fittings. Arrange perches and feeding points so the bird can use the space comfortably. Avoid overcrowding the interior with toys or accessories. Inspect regularly for damaged metal, loose parts or worn components that could injure the bird.

Outdoor and disease considerations

Outdoor aviaries need protection from weather, predators and escape as well as good ventilation^★ and hygiene. During avian-influenza controls, government guidance may require changes to housing and access for captive birds. Check current restrictions before moving birds outdoors. Whatever the setting, fresh water, appropriate food, clean surroundings and the ability to express normal behaviour remain fundamental.
