A 3D-printer buying guide should compare the machine, materials, software, safety arrangements and ongoing ownership requirements together.

Start with technology and materials

Choose the printing process around the result you need. Filament printers can be versatile for general parts and models, while resin printers can provide fine detail but involve liquid resin and additional handling. Consider the material ecosystem before buying: the printer should support the materials you actually intend to use and the manufacturer should provide appropriate operating guidance.

Check the complete specification

Compare build volume, resolution-related capabilities, temperature control where applicable, print-bed design, software workflow, connectivity and maintenance^★. Check what is included and what must be purchased separately. Consider whether an enclosure or extraction arrangement is appropriate for the chosen technology and location.

Calculate the real purchase

Allow for materials, replacement nozzles or build surfaces, cleaning supplies, post-processing tools and maintenance. Safety controls can also be part of the installation cost.
